    THE RIVER

    River

sometimes what you dont have time for

you gotta make time for it.

i was working and sweating not thinking too much..

when i got a call from my soul kinfolk.

sometimes  you dont know what you feel

when you are feeling it until it is felt.

lord have mercy kin..if you and her

cant make it work aint no hope  or chance

    for the rest of us.

and then he said  dee..i need you to make

your pen bleed for me man.

let others feel what i am feeling.

well kin i dont know about the bleeding

because i  just do what i do with this here

modest talent i lease from  the great spirit.

but i love you man so  i will try my best.

    it was  yesterday

    wait  a minute

    maybe the  day before

    or the day before that

you gotta excuse my faulty memory

    time kind of melts

    on  these hot summer days

i can see a love balloon

    floating gracefully  over

    laughter and good times

but when i blink my tired eyes

    a gust of  wind carries

    that balloon far away

i cant think too clearly right about now

    truth  be told

i dont  want to think at all

just want to go through the motions

of living day to day and silently hide

    notions of  forgiving

    aint too effective when

no one wants to be forgiven

    after  all

not too many people are willing

to let reality trample what is left

    of their pride

ive been looking through the good book

the one your mom gave us

    so long ago

pastor says the word is good for inspiration

and i believe  what he says

    truly i do

but when i opened the book

    right before genesis

my eyes  drifted to the dedication

    you once inscribed

love always for you and i

    in gods  name

    lord have mercy

    aint every man the same

despite what folks tend to believe

    about men i didnt have

an exit plan no i didnt

    wouldnt even think of one

    anyway what is the use

    in  preparing for the hurricane

when you are living smack dab

in the center of its eye

aint no more tears to shed

    the salt done run out

and i dont feel like getting  dressed

to  make a run to the store

    you always  made sure

to limit the salt in my diet

so it wouldnt make  much sense

to run out and  buy some more

what i need to know baby is

    why  did you take

    me down to the river

    knowing i was  thristy

and didnt tell me the river was dry

    why would you invite   me

    over for dinner

    knowing i was hungry

    and dont feed me

    just sit back and watch

    a grown man cry

    lord have mercy

    you know

    i have always said

    aint no true unconditional love

    except between god and you

    heck even your children

when they  fitting  to have a fit

can forget that you feed them

    clothe  them and nurse  them

when they are sick with the flu

    love is gift

    that keeps on giving

    oh yeah

    think  i heard that slogan

on a jewelry store ad one time

    but what happens when

    that old love balloon

    never had a chance

    to orbit the harvest moon

it just popped on the needles

    of a whisting  pine

    aint no emptiness like silence

when you are accustomed to hearing

    everyday chaos and the sound

    of  a joyous voice

    and tell me

how hard is it  to  maintain

    a semblance of sanity

    when the church  folks remarks

    tear at your heart

    things will get better

    trust in god

    keep your poise

    lord have mercy

    i dont have many answers

and i dont even think  about

    questioning the supreme

he knows what i do and do not need

    but  soul kin

    tell me how can i

    your brother dee

    finish  your homily

    without thinking of my own

    recent  memories

of why my pen slowly bleeds

    my brother gee money

always says  if it aint true love

    it is just boning

if it aint kissed by the heavens

    it is just moaning

    now that is some real

    grown folk  logic right there

    we always  sit and rap

    about what happens when

a man is about two steps from heaven

and moans  are the only thing

    he hears

    in the upper atmosphere

    but you aint the man

    making your woman moan

    can i just say this

    one more time  baby

    why did you take

    me down to the river

    knowing i was thristy

and didnt tell me the river was dry

    lord have mercy

    and why would you

    invite me over for dinner

    knowing i was hungry

    and dont feed me

    just sit back and watch

    a grown man cry

    i gotta know

    why

     why

    cant somebody tell me

    why

    why

    lord have mercy
