an old man told me
not too long ago
that mountain over yonder
once could be budged
but it dont move no mo
not since true romance died
and a lovers pride
ended up on death row
i stole a glance at the hill
he was speaking about
told him sage i agree with you
but at least i got to scout
and if what you say is true
i will sit down next to you
flip a pole in this bayou
and fish for some trout
old man asked me
when it comes to love
how many times have you lost
i said sage
with all due respect i havent taken the time
to add up the cost
not with so many of my brothers dying
and the many rivers our people
still have to cross
but let me say this
i aint never felt alone
from the freedom lands
down to the devils pan
i have roamed
believe it or not someone
has always been there
with an old shirt to spare
a hot meal and the use of a phone
well
i believe in love
still searching for the love i seek
and if i lose faith in love
who is going to take a chance
on loving me
old man said
well them development boys
done blocked the river all up
built a casino down on the bayou
to take more from poor folks
already down on their luck
then he shook his head
set some coffee to boiling
and handed me a tip cup
i said
sage i met this fiesty lady
named katrina down in new orleans
it felt like the 7 seals was opening
in a bad dream
but in the aftermath
one thing she taught me thats true
aint nothing a man can damn
when a river decides
to retrace its roots
closed my eyes
not to sleep but to cogitate
whispered to the old man
look i know my chances aint that great
but in this war of attrition
against satans minions
nothing beats having a good woman
by your side
with whom you can confide
you see sage
seems to me them powerful men
is trying to make love appear corrupt
and it plays with your feelings
because when it comes to love
we both felt sure
until there was a note on loves door
saying she dont live here anymore
but i am stubborn
well
i believe in love
still searching for the love i seek
and if i lose faith in love
who is going to take a chance
on loving me
old man sighed and said
down in jefferson parish
i knew this gal named flo
where she is buried
lord i dont even know
but i had a love jones on her mean
then he chuckled and said
or maybe it was the way she
made them good collard greens
i laughed and said
sage i truly understand
lord knows when it comes to love
aint nothing you can plan
but god has a sense of humor
did you ever think you would live
long enough to see a man
of african descent
grow up
to become an american president
old man smiled and said
you make a damn good point
but hell
love is even harder than that
seems like the rules up and change
everytime you learn the true facts
guess thats why i am lonely
fishin in this old bayou
sitting under this tree
thats older than me
i said sage
i dig your logic
heck you have been there
but the way i see it
abraham
jesus and the prophet muhammad
spread the good word and died
still love hasnt gone anywhere
there is just a mountain
waiting to be moved
and we got to cross a river damned
by man
to answer loves demand
well
i believe in love
still searching for the love i seek
and if i lose faith in love
who is going to take a chance
on loving me
who is going to take a chance
on loving me
