    OUR LADY OF VICTORY

    Victory

dedicated to the memories of a time

    never to be forgotten

    hopping them steps

    two at a time

    trippin with kurt

buying a soft pretzel with my dime

    innocent thoughts

running through my pre adolescent mind

among friends in that warm cocoon

    laughing with will

    imitating bugs bunny cartoons

all of us living in a ghetto crucible

    though not yet  consumed

    janice..margurite and veda

    just beginning to bloom

    into beautiful  roses

    performing  stations of the cross

learning about jesus christ and moses

    back in the day

when the ghetto wasnt as corrosive

    as it is now

    playing touch football at recess

    wiping sweat from my brow

    neither my partners nor myself

    were holier than thou

    but one bond is true

    we always kept our vows

    to our lady

    our lady of victory

    protected us from hostility

    made hope our reality

when we sang  with mrs larry

    to be young

    gifted and black

    and thats a fact

    the colors from mental pictures

tend  to fade after a while

warm  memories tend to get buried

    beneath a pile

of press clippings from an adult world

    gone mad

    every once and a while

when its a down period im going through

i start humming our 8th grade

    graduation song

do you know where you are going to

do you like the things that life

    is showing you

    do you know

    those words  ring so true

    when you are grown

    talking with tim and lyle

    on the phone

    many of us have been

    around the world

    and still call philly home

    like prodigal sons

no matter how far we have roamed

we find comfort in  familiar places

    and faces

    traces

    of gray  in our goatees

    strain in our voices

    from dealing with adversity

but we will always be brothers

    bonded forever by memories

    of our lady

    our lady of victory

    protected us from  hostility

    made hope our reality

when we sang with mrs larry

    to be young

    gifted and black

    and thats a fact

    and

    thats

    a fact
