This is a simple story of a couple who have been together for many years and now....
How long have you been aware
That we'd drifted apart
For once we danced in the Round
To the beat of our hearts
Yet now I find
Our hearts a step out of time
With no rhythm nor rhyme
Can I conclude
Without being rude
Eccentricites you once thought rare
Are no longer approved
Subtle gesticulations
Once greeted with lust
Now met with a distrustful agitation
I had become
Quite comfortable in my skin
Now do we begin
The process
Of being friends
Or succumb to feelings within
With nothing to remember
A prologue of the past
On the last
Day of September
Are you upset
Or better yet resigned
For once we danced
To the rhythm
Of your heart and mine
Yet what once was sublime
Is now out of step
With time
Can I decide
The proper exit I choose
I'll take the side door
For I know you abhor
Our lives in the news
If anyone asks
Tell them I fell
While dancing at the Ball
With a Southern Belle
I had become
Quite easy to please
Now I'm aware your suddenly quiet demeanor
Was the result of a woman berieved
Mourning a death
Of 2 hearts apart
Of a song that abuptly ends
Never again to start
Hearts once warm and tender
Turning like the page
From the past
On the last
Day of September
