    IS THIS ALL WE HAVE

jamesons straight up and neat...and charlie close the door..and no interruptions willya..thanks.

    is this all we have

just a fickle moment in the round

quite profound this love affair once was

    until because  became emblematic

    of our fate

such emphatic statements we would make

seems the chips were down and we parlayed

    our meager treasure for uncertainty

    why would we

and now it has come to be

that this is all we have

    is this all we have

    a snapshot  coated in dust

trust being a momentary lapse of reason

    treasonous in our quest

to discover what once was forgotten

yet the pain we endured for a trifling gain

    was misbegotten

    holding  16 bust or 21

gambling a future already on the run

    such temerity

and now it has come to be

that this is all we have

    the  whippoorwill chases the warbles

    near the window

while i listen to gratuitous garbled

    messages laced with innuendo

    the crescendo fades

    as the flamenco dancers

    take their bows

    and now

    is this all we  have

an idle ciggarette and a shot of whiskey

    briskly the lovers exit

    the once crowded promenade

our love affair yes a movie facade

depicting bright lights and big cities

the roulette wheel about to spin

i place a bet on 9  feeling kind of nifty

    on love we gambled irresponsibly

and now it has come to be

that this is all we have

    is this all we have

a forlorn kiss that no longer lingers

    fingers reaching for shadows

    beneath the arch

two  hearts apart with very little delay

    a sensuous segue ignored

as i nibble on shrimp etouffee

    the slot machines jingle

as expectant lovers  mingle  on the casino floor

and a solitary man walks to the door

    quite sadly

for it has come to be

that this is all we have
