    I BEGIN (WITH THIS PEN)

    Pen

    i begin

    with this pen

it has walked with me for 30 years

    through valleys of darkness

    and brought me back again

    now i admit

    i have made bad choices

    but with this pen

    in my hand

    i became a man

who could interpret his inner voices

    and so now

    i dedicate this to you

after all that we have been through

for 7 years you bid a sad adieu

    when i disrespected the muse

    and now

as i sit and quietly peruse

    all that i have written

    be it dumb struck

    or love smitten

    never did you stop

delivering a song of the wind to me

    through acceptance and adversity

always bringing an infusion of passion

    when love was being rationed

    and so now

i can hear the father callimg me

    saying dee

    deliver your personal homily

    for everything i do

    and say i am

    the father

    son

    lover

    brother

    begins

    with this pen

always imploring me to reach within

feeling gods breath upon my skin

    i say this

    to family and friends

who were always there for me

even when i  refused to believe

please know that every word i bleed

    on this page

is for the love of you

for once  when i felt anger and uncontrollable rage

you told me to stand tall and brave

    my life

    you truly saved

    and to think

    it all begins

    with this pen

    and my admission

    in poetry and prose

my means didnt always justify the end

    yet through

    the  manic mistakes

    and faithless doubts

the black pride in me would shout

    refuse to pretend

    and always defend

    your pen

    and  though i know

the past is time now forever lost

    lord knows

    i have paid the cost

the devil sure nuff took a toll

    but though my soul

    was  leased

    never was it sold

    and even know

    when sit down to eat

the body and blood of the christ

i know the devil is waiting in these mean streets

but never again will i be weak

    for though the meek

shall one day inherit the earth

as a black man i must proove my worth

    everyday

    every morning do i pray

please dear god bless the world

    my family and friends

    and let my day begin

    with this pen
