BORN TO BE BLACK (A TRIBUTE TO LANGSTON HUGHES)

    Scented droplets of sweat cascading,

a bemused smile beneath pain masquerading,

do dat Harlem Slide, boppin', Cha-Cha too sweet,

let Monday morning talk to my tired feet

Can I ride on a rainbow

    colored red, black and green,

chill with the mellow fellows and dig the Malcolm scene,

Praise God for my aspect to the Son now clearly defined,

I WAS BORN TO BE BLACK,

    BEFORE BLACKNESS WAS A CRIME

    The colorless gotta confess,

they copy the style of my dress,

pointed toes, cuffed slacks, slick like pig grease,

let Monday morning talk to my tired feet

Can I slide on Black Ice colored mahogany tone,

chill wit the can't resist her sistas 'till the morning sun gloams,

Praise God for a house that ain't eva closed,

I WAS BORN TO BE BLACK,

    BEFORE BLACKNESS WAS IN VOGUE
